It was all smiles at the Mothers In Action Beer Garden honoring the founding President Brenda Marsh-Mitchell, operated by KBLA 1580 AM Talk Radio and Mothers In Action, at the 17th Annual Taste of Soul.

The live DJ on Crenshaw and West 39th Street maintained high energy with his set of old school tunes, while friends and loved ones enjoyed refreshments from Star Beer USA Inc.

Star Beer USA, Inc. is the only African beer available and sold in the United States.

This minority-owned business donates 5% of their profits to cervical cancer research in the memory of CEO May Chioma Odiakosa’s sister Ngozi Okaka, who passed away in 2019 from cancer. Odiakosa shared she was excited to bring her product to the celebration to share with the beer garden.

The African Larger Beer was offered at the event entrance and at the KBLA sponsored bar.

The spirit of family could be felt throughout the garden. Bakewell family members were present and participating in the festivities, along with sisters Tracy and Pamela Mitchell.

Their mother Brenda Marsh-Mitchell founded Mothers In Action and the organization has been serving the community since 1992. Providing mentoring services, summer internships, homeless outreach, food distribution, assist with voter registration, and other supportive services, Mothers In Action has sustained 30 years.

Those unfamiliar with the organization were encouraged to learn about their services.

The check-in booth was a source of information and promoted the Mothers In Action mission.

“We’re so excited to be back [at the Taste of Soul].

It feels good to be here having fun with friends again after the pandemic.

The music and the vibes are just right,” said a guest of the experience. “This is one way we can continue to show up for each other.” With drinks in hand, the crowd was dancing and laughing.

The space was designed perfectly for the unpredictable weather of the day.

Carefully placed tents to kept attendees dry from random moments of rain, but their placements also allowed the sun to shine through the clouds.

The Beer Garden was a great addition to the theme of the family food festival.
